German chemicals company Evonik has signed a supply agreement with MTC Orec, a Malaysian state-backed renewable energy producer, to provide its SEPURAN Green membrane systems for biogas plants across Asia Pacific. The deal, finalised on 23 April, marks one of the most significant moves yet to bring European gas-upgrading technology to the region.

SEPURAN Green membranes, made at Evonik's plant in Schoerfling, Austria, are already in use at more than 2,000 sites globally. The system converts raw biogas from organic waste into biomethane, a renewable gas that can replace natural gas in heating, power generation, and transport.

The technology uses a three-stage hollow-fibre membrane design that achieves biomethane purity above 99% with a single compressor. That means lower running costs and fewer technical demands, an advantage in markets where energy infrastructure is still maturing. Modules can also be adjusted for different waste inputs and output volumes.

For MTC Orec, the agreement provides a tested platform for regional expansion. For Evonik, it broadens the commercial reach of a product that has become a reference standard in the sector.

The timing reflects a broader policy shift. Across Asia Pacific, governments are tightening renewable energy targets and seeking ways to reduce organic waste. Demand for reliable upgrading technology is rising as a result. Whether this deal accelerates a wider shift toward biomethane in heavy industry and shipping, sectors where decarbonisation remains difficult, will depend on how quickly markets build the supporting infrastructure.
