Cycle0’s Corte Pila upgrade shows how converting biogas plants into grid-ready biomethane cuts risk as EU and national incentives drive demand
2 Feb 2026

Europe’s renewable gas sector is changing how it grows. Instead of starting from scratch, developers are buying existing biogas plants and upgrading them to produce biomethane that flows straight into national gas grids. It is faster, cheaper, and less risky. Quietly, it is reshaping the market.
A recent deal in northern Italy shows how this works in practice. Cycle0 has acquired the Corte Pila biogas plant in Lombardy and is converting it from power generation to biomethane production. Once complete, the site is expected to deliver about 44 gigawatt hours of renewable gas each year. That gas will support heating, transport, and industry, while strengthening local energy security.
The reasoning behind these conversions is simple. Many older biogas plants were built to sell electricity into markets that have grown volatile. Biomethane offers a steadier path, with demand supported by policy and long term contracts. At the European level, the REPowerEU plan promotes renewable gas to cut reliance on fossil fuel imports. In Italy, national incentives add confidence by rewarding grid injection and plant upgrades.
For developers, the appeal goes beyond subsidies. Repurposing operating plants avoids years of permitting and community debate. Feedstock is already in place, often from agricultural residues. Timelines shrink, costs are clearer, and financing becomes easier to secure.
Cycle0 is not alone. Across Europe, companies such as EnviTec Biogas are expanding their biomethane portfolios by upgrading existing assets. Different players are reaching the same conclusion. Demand for biomethane is real, and modernizing what already exists is the quickest way to meet it.
Challenges remain. Grid access can be tight, and infrastructure upgrades take planning. Still, analysts see these hurdles as manageable. Projects like Corte Pila point to a more mature phase for biomethane, where smart reuse of legacy assets is driving steady growth. Renewable gas is moving into the mainstream, and the shift is picking up speed.
