Asterion backs biomethane platform ABIO with €1.5B to build 40 plants across Europe by 2030 and accelerate renewable gas production
9 Mar 2026

Asterion Industrial Partners has committed €1.5bn to expand its biomethane platform ABIO, in one of the largest investments in renewable gas infrastructure in Europe.
The Madrid-based infrastructure investor said the funding would support the development and acquisition of biomethane plants across several European markets, as the region seeks to increase domestic renewable gas production.
ABIO currently operates six plants and has a further six under construction in Spain, Italy, Germany, the Benelux region and the UK. The company aims to have 20 facilities in operation by the end of 2026 and as many as 40 by 2030.
The investment includes €800mn of equity from Asterion’s third infrastructure fund, alongside capital from institutional co-investors. The platform has already completed nearly 10 transactions, including new plant developments in southern Europe and conversions of existing assets in northern markets.
Biomethane is produced from agricultural waste and organic residues using anaerobic digestion, a biological process that generates renewable gas chemically similar to fossil natural gas. Because it can be injected into existing pipeline networks, the fuel is viewed by policymakers as a relatively immediate option for reducing emissions in heating, transport and some industrial uses.
ABIO’s facilities also capture carbon dioxide produced during the process and generate organic fertiliser as a by-product.
The investment comes as the European Union pushes to expand renewable gas production under its REPowerEU strategy. The plan targets annual biomethane output of 35bn cubic metres by 2030, compared with current production of about 22bn cubic metres.
ABIO’s expansion strategy varies across markets. In Spain, Portugal and Italy the company is developing new plants, while in Germany it operates two Bio-LNG facilities. In the Benelux region, some existing power generation assets are being converted to biomethane production, and one plant is currently operating in the UK.
Asterion estimates the platform could produce up to 3.5TWh of biomethane annually by 2030, supplying energy equivalent to the needs of more than 200,000 households.
Investors and policymakers increasingly view biomethane as part of Europe’s broader effort to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels while supporting emissions targets set for the coming decades.
