Europe’s push for cleaner energy has gained a lift from a €190m pact between TotalEnergies and HitecVision. The French major has sold half its stake in Polska Grupa Biogazowa (PGB), Poland’s biggest biogas producer. The move marks a shift towards larger, better financed players in a sector once dominated by small farms and scattered municipal schemes.

PGB already operates 20 plants that together produce more than 450GWh of green energy each year. It hopes to reach 2TWh by 2030, a target that will require new sites, ambitious upgrades and reliable access to feedstock across Poland and beyond. With fresh capital from HitecVision and operational know how from TotalEnergies, the firm plans to grow through acquisitions and investment in new infrastructure.

For TotalEnergies, the tie up fits a strategy of sharing risk with financial partners who can deploy capital quickly. HitecVision, an active investor in the energy transition, gains a foothold in one of Europe’s fastest growing renewable gas markets. “Poland’s biogas sector has vast potential,” a HitecVision spokesperson said. “Together, we can boost sustainable energy and advance regional climate goals.”

Competition is likely to intensify. Analysts note that small operators face rising pressure to consolidate as the hunt for organic waste tightens and the need for steady output grows. Bigger companies such as PGB are better placed to secure feedstock, lock in grid access and deliver predictable volumes, traits prized by buyers seeking low carbon gas.

Obstacles remain. Supplies of suitable waste are limited. Permitting can drag on. Cross border expansion may test policymakers’ enthusiasm for renewable gas. Yet the deal highlights investors’ belief that biogas will play a larger role in Europe’s decarbonisation effort, especially as governments seek more domestic energy sources.

If the partnership delivers, Poland could strengthen its position in a part of the energy market that is moving from niche to scale. Europe’s biogas boom is attracting deeper pockets, along with bigger ambitions.
